Diabetes is a chronic, lifelong disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. It affects adults as well as children. There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form in which the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Some ethnicities/groups have a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes than others. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults where the body does not produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life.
Statistics show that 24 million children and adults in the United States live with diabetes. Over 50% of these children or adults have a chance of suffering from mild to severe nerve damage, and more than a 65% chance of dying from heart disease or stroke. Diabetes also increases the rate of amputation, kidney failure and adult blindness.
The Diabetes awareness color is grey and the National Diabetes Day is recognized in November. When you wear our diabetes lapel pin, you help raise awareness to the causes and treatments for diabetes.
In addition to the Diabetes Awareness items, we offer a variety of pins in these categories: Awareness Pins, Animal Pins and Religious & Inspirational.
