Florence Nightingale devoted her life to nursing and was by most accounts the leading advocate of the nursing profession of all time. She was affectionately refereed to as "The Lady with the Lamp" as she carried her lamp late at night from patient to patient to care for them long after hospital nursing hours. Today upon graduation many nurses recite the Florence Nightingale Pledge.
