Patches FAQs

Patch Application Methods:

  • How Do I Put Patches on My Clothes?

How you attach your patch to your clothing will greatly depend on the type of patch you choose; for most of our patches, you can select either a sew-on or iron-on backing.

  • How Do I Put on An Iron-On Patch?

Ironing is the quickest and most straightforward method for attaching an embroidery patch. To attach an embroidery patch using an iron, preheat the iron to 350 degrees without steam. Place a towel over the patch and fabric to protect them. Press the heated iron onto the patch for about a minute, making slow circular motions. Check if the patch is secure and repeat the process if needed. Then, allow it to cool; once it reaches room temperature, you can check that it’s securely attached.

  • How Do I Put on A Sew-On Patch?

For the sew-on patch, you can choose between using a sewing machine or a needle and thread and sewing down along the edge on the inside of the patch. Both are great options for attaching your embroidery patch. The thicker your patch, the thicker your needle will need to be. We recommend using a thread color that matches the outer ring on the patch.

  • How Do I Use a Needle and Thread to Attach the Patch?

When using a needle and thread to attach a patch, start by pinning the patch onto the fabric in the desired position. Use a thin waxed thread in a matching color to sew through the fabric from the inside. Thread the needle through the patch and back again for a secure hold, moving your way around the patch until you reach the point where you started.

  • How Do I Use a Sewing Machine to Attach the Patch?

To attach your patch, place it where you want it to go and pin it down. Then, lay your piece of clothing flat on the sewing machine. Use the narrowest zigzag setting to get your patch's tiniest, most subtle stitches. Begin sewing around the patch's edges, adjusting your garment as needed. Once you've sewn all around and returned to the starting point, you're all done!

Best Materials and Durability:

  • What Is the Best Material for Iron-On Patches?

Thicker materials are best for iron-on patches because they don't require a needle through the dense fabric. Denim and cotton are great when adhering to iron-on patches. However, you will want to avoid materials that cannot stand heat, such as silk, polyester, and other delicate fabrics, since an iron's heat can discolor or burn them.

  • What Is the Best Material for Sew-On Patches?

Some of the best materials for sew-on patches are cotton, acetate, polyester, silk, wool, and polyurethane. Cotton is an excellent option because it's lightweight and easy to use when sewing your embroidery patch.

  • How Well Do Iron-On Patches Work?

Iron-on patches are perfect for regular use and washing. While frequent washing in hot water or harsh detergents may weaken the adhesive bond, they are still durable.

  • How Well Do Sew-On Patches Work?

With the right tools, such as a needle, thread, scissors, and a straight pin, sew-on patches will securely attach to your clothes for a long time and will not fall off.

  • How Long Do Iron-On Patches Last?

An iron-on patch will generally stay attached for about 25 washes. However, this will depend on how your item is washed and how often it is worn between washes.
